In Depth :
Zack Collier's baseball career was in danger two years ago. Mainly because his life was too. It was only when the Chino Hills High School left fielder collapsed after a May 21, 2006 practice that a perilous birth defect was discovered. Underneath his strapping 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame Collier had an anomalous left coronary artery, meaning one of the main vessels that supplied his heart with blood was pinched. At first they said he'd never play again. Collier had open heart surgery five days later. He didn't set foot on a baseball diamond for seven months. He came back with a vengeance.
After a sometimes difficult recovery, Chino Hills outfielder Zack Collier was selected in the first round (34th overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Major League First-Year Player Draft. The Philadelphia Phillies, among others, took notice, selecting him with the 34th overall pick of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft on June 5. Collier signed with the team Wednesday of that week. While most players of his age and ability were playing in high-profile showcases, Collier laid low his junior season and into the summer. He came out of hiding as a senior. Collier hit .450 with seven home runs and 24 RBI in just 80 at-bats to lead Chino Hills to the Sierra League championship, earning him Inland Valley Player of the Year honors. That's an RBI every 3.3 at-bats and a home run every 11.4 at-bats.
The highlights are plentiful, be it Collier's two-home run game against Sierra League rival Damien that he ended with a walk-off shot. There was the home run he hit off Long Beach Wilson fireballer Aaron Hicks, the 14th pick of the draft, that landed in the street outside Cal State Fullerton's stadium. "This year was definitely the best I've done in high school," Collier said. "I'm pretty much living the dream right now." Each mock draft leading up to the MLB draft seemed to have Collier going higher than the one preceding it. Collier will join the Phillies' rookie-level team in Clearwater, Fla., next week.
Jiovanni Meir selected to 18u Olympic National Team:
It also brings us great pride to announce that Jiovanni Mier has been selected to the 2008 18u USA National Olympic Team. Jio, or G-Money as he's known by the Storm family spent 5 years as a Storm standout. He is the first Storm alumni to make any National Olympic Team. We are so proud of him!Ê
Mier has also been selected as an AFLAC All American and will play at Dodger Stadium this summer in a nationally televised event that features the top 50 high schoolers in the country. Jio is slotted to go in the first round of next years draft by most scouts. He has been offered scholarships all across the country.
The 2009 class of Storm athletes may be the best class ever coached by Mike Trento. This Storm class of players that are now seniors and the few that graduated last year compiled a lifetime record of 354-114 over 8 years and won 3 state titles and 2 world titles. Please be on the lookout this year for Mier, as well as Ethan Miller (Ayala), Andrew Melchor (Nogales) Phil Holinsworth (Chino Hills) Josh Evans (Chino Hills) Adam Hurley (Chino Hills) and David Rivera (Upland) to name a few. We expect them all to make some noise next summer.
