Jiovanni Mier drafted in first round by the Houston Astros:
Good news! Ex Chino Hills Storm and Chino Hills Pony Player Jiovanni Mier has signed with the Houston Astros. The deal is reportedly worth $1.358 million and will be complete when he takes a physical. It was expected to be announced by the Astros on Friday June 26th. Jiovanni will be reporting to rookie camp in one week and start learning how to be a big league player.
The $1.358 signing bonus is reportedly $26,000 over the MLB recommended price. We finally came to a deal, Mier told Ex-Coach Mike Trento in a phone conference on Friday. "I'm glad we came to a conclusion and my [agents] got it done. I'm trying to get out there and play.
Jio is the 3rd straight 1st round player to come out of Chino Hills Pony Baseball and the second straight Chino Hills Storm player to be signed in the first round. Last year Zack Collier signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, and in 2007 Chris Parmelee signed with Minnesota. Mier played under Mike Trentos tutelage for 5 years and has tremendous experience at a very high level, including 3 World Championship Rings, and Perfect Game showcase experience. He was an 2009 AFLAC All- American, and was a finalist for the USA 18 year old Olympic Team.
To say the Astros were thrilled to be able to select Jiovanni Mier, a shortstop from Bonita High School in Laverne, Calif., with their first pick in the First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday would be an understatement said Trento.
"According to scouting director Bobby Heck, "They thought he was the best baseball player in this Draft," Trento said. "This is a true shortstop who stays at shortstop and has defensive ability and some offensive ability as well, and they think he's going to grow into some power."
Mier, a right-handed hitter who was in Houston last week to participate in a workout, hit .394 with five home runs and 18 RBIs in his senior season. He was committed to USC, before the Astros signed him.
"Heck said he was elated that Jio was still there,"Picking where they did, they had to wait for some stuff to fall to them, but it was an excited room when Mier was still around."
Trento said Mier will be honored with 6 other Chino Hills Storm seniors at the Storm Hall of Fame induction Ceremony August 8th at Quakes Stadium. We are expecting over 400 people at the event this year, Trento said.
Inductees include, Ethan Miller (San Diego State), Phil Holinsworth (UCR) Andrew Melchor (Cal Poly) Adam Hurley (Undeclared) Josh Evans (Undeclared) Nick Lenhart (University of Arizona) and Anthony Trento (UC Santa Barbara)
Anyone interested in attending the induction ceremony should contact Mike Trento at 714-883-4349

Dateline, TNT Baseball Academy:
TNT'S OWN POWERHITTER ZACK COLLIER SIGNS WITH THE MAJORS. CONGRATULATIONS ZACK!
Check out Zack's History and Stats in his exclusive writeup right here~
Zack Collier's baseball career was in danger two years ago. Mainly because his life was too. It was only when the Chino Hills High School left fielder collapsed after a May 21, 2006 practice that a perilous birth defect was discovered. Underneath his strapping 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame Collier had an anomalous left coronary artery, meaning one of the main vessels that supplied his heart with blood was pinched. At first they said he'd never play again. Collier had open heart surgery five days later. He didn't set foot on a baseball diamond for seven months. He came back with a vengeance.
After a sometimes difficult recovery, Chino Hills outfielder Zack Collier was selected in the first round (34th overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Major League First-Year Player Draft. The Philadelphia Phillies, among others, took notice, selecting him with the 34th overall pick of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft on June 5. Collier signed with the team Wednesday of that week. While most players of his age and ability were playing in high-profile showcases, Collier laid low his junior season and into the summer. He came out of hiding as a senior. Collier hit .450 with seven home runs and 24 RBI in just 80 at-bats to lead Chino Hills to the Sierra League championship, earning him Inland Valley Player of the Year honors. That's an RBI every 3.3 at-bats and a home run every 11.4 at-bats.
The highlights are plentiful, be it Collier's two-home run game against Sierra League rival Damien that he ended with a walk-off shot. There was the home run he hit off Long Beach Wilson fireballer Aaron Hicks, the 14th pick of the draft, that landed in the street outside Cal State Fullerton's stadium. "This year was definitely the best I've done in high school," Collier said. "I'm pretty much living the dream right now." Each mock draft leading up to the MLB draft seemed to have Collier going higher than the one preceding it. Collier will join the Phillies' rookie-level team in Clearwater, Fla., next week.
